Employees with DMC Landscaping prepared the space where the Ten Commandments Monument will be placed on the lawn of the LeFlore County Courthouse. The landscaping company will also do all the upkeep on and around the monument. An unveiling has been set for Dec. 7. PDN photo by Laura Young By Laura Young Managing Editor
Work on the placement of the Ten Commandments Monument at the LeFlore County Courthouse began Wednesday. DMC Landscaping began digging out the area for the monument in front of the War Memorial and flag pole. According to Charlie Horsley of the Disabled American Veterans the official unveiling will take place Dec. 7. "We thought we were going to be able to have it completed by Veterans Day but it is taking the monument company a little longer than expected," Horsley said. "They wanted the monument to match the polished surface of the War Memorial. So we're going to do this on an equally appropriate day - Pearl Harbor Day." Horsley said there will be a walkway from Broadway to the monument as well as from the War Memorial. The monument will be lighted on both sides and have flowers placed around it. The Ten Commandments will be on the front facing Broadway and the back will have the Pledge of Allegiance as well as words outlining the purpose of the monument. "We want to thank all those who have contributed to this project and especially to Don Barnes for starting the drive," Horsley said. "We are sorry it has taken so long. Now it is time to complete the project."
