Surgeon brings new procedures to EOMC
Monday, 09 November 2009
Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center recently recruited a surgeon, Dr. Jayson Avenmarg, M.D. to its medical staff.
Dr. Avenmarg is trained in the latest minimally invasive surgical procedures such as hand-assisted laparoscopic colon resection, laparoscopic hernia repair, laparoscopic anti-reflux procedures, laparoscopic splenectomy, procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids, needle localization breast biopsy and sentinel node biopsy.
Laparoscopic procedures use a camera and special instruments through small incisions to help reduce the operative time and post-operative pain when compared to the same procedure done through the traditional open incision.  The minimally invasive nature of the procedures helps reduce blood loss, decreases infection rates, and shortens the recovery period after operation.
“When I first started in training, the patient was in the hospital for well over a week when we removed part of the colon.  Now the patient is home in three to four days” Dr. Avenmarg noted.
The recovery time for a typical laparoscopic groin hernia repair is half what it previously was for an open repair of a groin hernia.
The procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids is the latest technique to remove hemorrhoids.  A circular stapler is used to interrupt the blood flow to and cut out the hemorrhoid tissue in an area with minimal sensory nerves.
“This procedure has revolutionized the treatment of hemorrhoids.  It is virtually painless, and the patients return to all their regular activities in about a week” Dr. Avenmarg stated.
Needle localization breast biopsy and sentinel node biopsy are minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat breast cancer.
The procedures are used to maintain the bulk of the breast tissue so the patient doesn’t need to go through a mastectomy and reconstruction of the breast.
All of the minimally invasive procedures are designed to create a safer operation, while reducing the pain and recovery time for the patient.
Both a hand-assisted laparoscopic colon resection and a laparoscopic hernia repair have already been performed at EOMC.
The patients are doing great and have been very pleased with their easy recoveries.
Dr. Avenmarg is located at the Family Medical Clinic.
