Lookin' Down The Barrel
Thursday, 12 November 2009
By George Midgley

I ran onto Jesse and Jamie Rice in the woods Saturday afternoon. They were hanging stands for this coming weekend. Jesse killed a good buck in muzzleloading season and he promised to get me a picture of it in the upcoming weeks so I could put it in the paper. My uncle, Leon Midgley, made a comment during muzzleloading season that I’ve been thinking about. He was talking about the “BP Buck” whose picture has been floating around in text messages. As the story goes, the buck was poached around Wilburton just before bow season and BP has supposedly offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to arrest of the culprit.
Now I have not talked to anyone important who has actually confirmed either the poaching or the reward but lots of people believe it to be true. I had my wife “google” it and nothing comes up on the internet about BP offering any rewards for it. Plus, there isn’t any mention of it on the BP website either.
Uncle Leon said that there is something wrong with the world today if there is a reward for $25,000 for a deer poacher but only $10,000 for the killer of Joe Neff. Now I have thought about that and it just does not seem right.  Is there anyone out there who actually works for BP that can confirm if this is true or not?
The bucks are on the move, I’ve seen them in some of the oddest places here lately. However, I was on a bow hunt last weekend and I did not see a deer one while in the woods. I did get a shot at a big gobbler but I was dejected to see my Lumenok lighted arrow nock fly about three inches over its back from the 50-yard shot. I was also bummed when I could not find my $30 arrow afterward but that is archery for you. I will have to go visit Jerry Davidson and get him to stock me back up with arrows and Lumenoks.
Jason Sampson, my cousin, is coming in this weekend to hunt. We have set aside a weekend to hunt together the last few years and he has been successful in taking a few deer including a good buck two years ago. I have a couple of stands that have not been hunted as of yet and one that has only been sat in once so I am hopeful that I will get a shot from one of those.
Gun season is coming and my family is getting ready for camping. We always have a great time and eat way too much. Dad is the camp chef and he is up every morning before daylight cooking breakfast for the troops. We all appreciate his work and dedication to make deer season more enjoyable for everyone.
Have a great week.
