Bulldogs drop two to Roland |

Josh Napier,Sports Reporter - The Spiro Lady Bulldogs lost a close one Friday night to the number 17 ranked Roland Lady Rangers 48-43. Three players for the Lady Dogs scored in double figures and almost pulled off the upset.
In the first quarter with 4:35 left Spiro took over the lead at 5-4. With 3:25 left they were able to extend their lead to 10-5 off of Angel Miller’s basket. But Roland would come storming back going on a 7-0 run to go up 12-10 at the end of the first quarter. Kendra Manager hit a buzzer beating three in the corner to give Roland the lead at the end of the first.Roland jumped out in the second on a 6-0 run to go up 18-10. Roland would eventually get their lead up to 10 with 1:30 24-14. The Lady Dogs would then go on a 6-2 run to end the quarter to make the score 26-20 going into the half.Samantha Stout led the Lady Dogs with nine points in the first half. Ericka Edwards led Roland with 12 in the first half with eight coming in the second.In the third the Lady Dogs would cut the lead to three when Kayli Fouts hit a three with 4:10 to go in the third to bring the score to 29-26. Roland would then go on a 5-0 run to end the quarter up by eight 34-26.In the fourth it looked like Roland was going to run away with the game when Edwards made it a 10 point lead with 7:00 left 38-28. But Spiro would make one last run, and with :17.2 left they would cut the lead to three at 45-42. But Edwards and Jasmine Kirkwood would ice the game with three big free throws at the end to escape with a 48-43 win.Edwards led Roland with a game high 18 points, Samantha Stout and Kassi Orozco led Spiro with 11 apiece.In the boys’ game the Bulldogs held a two point lead at the half, but the third quarter doomed the Dogs as they let the lead slip away and could never recover as they lost 55-45.The Bulldogs were able to jump out to an early lead as they went on a 5-0 run to start out the game. Tremel Seymour opened up the game with a three and Blake Scott added a bucket. Spiro would gain as much as an eight point lead with 2:00 left in the opening stanza. But Roland ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to bring them within two at 18-16 going into the second.Roland’s Will Roam tied the game up to start the second at 18 with two free throws, and took the lead off of Dougie Webster’s basket with 5:15 to go in the second. The rest of the quarter would be back and forth as both teams exchanged leads. Spiro was able to go on a 5-2 run to end the quarter to go up 27-25 going into the half. Spiro was led by Seymour in the first half with 12, Roland was led by Levi Biggerstaff with nine.The third quarter is where it fell apart for the Dogs as Roland outscored them 12-4 in the quarter. Roland started with a 6-2 run until Spiro’s Trevon Seymour tied the ball game up at 31 with 3:00 left in the quarter. But Roland would go on a 6-0 run to end the quarter to go up 37-31.Spiro’s Kenneth Summers started out the fourth hitting two free throws to cut the lead to four. But the Rangers responded with a 17-3 run to go up 55-36 late in the fourth. Spiro would score the last nine points but the lead was too much as it was too little too late for the Dogs and they let the game slip out of their hand 55-45.Seymour led all scorers with 15, Biggerstaff led Roland with 13. |
