By Laura Ann Burleigh, I hope everyone had a good St. Patrick's Day, and is having a great Spring Break so far! This week, I thought I'd take the time to tell everyone about my dog, Luke. He's a seven-year-old beagle, and he's still got the personality of a puppy. He has more energy than most of you could imagine. I got Luke in the second grade for Halloween. He was tiny and I took him everywhere. His head was black, with a perfect little "mask" across his eyes. Actually, we almost named him Bandit because of it.
We ended up deciding on Luke, after the old soap opera Luke and Laura. None of my friends get it, but most adults catch on.Luke has been the cause of many of my public embarrassments these last few years. Every time we take him out in public, something embarrassing beyond belief happens. The worst time of all, was probably when we decided to take him to Petsmart in Sherman when I was nine years old. I have two words to describe this: BIG. MISTAKE. It all started when we saw an ad in the paper about the grand opening of Petsmart. They were having discounted groomings and other things you could do with your pet. My mom and I figured, why not save a few bucks and go check it out, so we loaded Luke up in the car. When we got there, there was a trailer sitting outside from the local animal shelter. Inside, there were several animals that the shelter was promoting, so they would be adopted. I wanted to go look at them (I mean, what nine-year-old wouldn't?) but my mom said to wait until after we'd had Luke groomed. I gave up, and we went inside to drop Luke off. We didn't want to hang around, since he throws a complete fit around water. He absolutely hates it! After he was done with the groomer, we tried having his picture taken by a professional photographer. This was the beginning of the embarrassment. First, we got Luke up on this table with flowers, and right when the guy is about to snap the picture, Luke jumped off of the table, ran under it, and pulled the lady who was holding his leash with him. After a few tries however, we finally got a good shot of him. Then, as we were paying for everything, I looked down and Luke is "wizzing" all over the camera guy's bag. I freaked out, and ran outside since I didn't know what to do. Then I went to look at the animals from the animal shelter. (I would get payback for this.) My mom was standing a few feet away, waiting for me to finish. As I was standing there, my leg became warm and wet. My eyes widened and I slowly looked down, praying that Luke did not do what I thought he had done. He had. I screamed and ran away. I guess I deserved it though, but I still love him anyway! That's just one of the many crazy happenings with Luke. Hope you got a few laughs out of it.
