By David Deaton, News Reporter - Fourth grade Poteau Upper Elementary students Dylan Fifield and Brandon Durant won first place trophies in the State Invention Convention Contest held recently at Oklahoma City.Fifield invented the Shake Me to Safety Bed, which took second place in the local school competition. Durant invented a Portable Baby Swing, which placed fifth in the local competition. Both boys also received $50 and a meeting with Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry.Madison Williamson, fourth grade student, was the State Division winner with her invention of A Knot In Time. She received $100 cash.PUE Librarian and Invention Convention sponsor stated, "Poteau school had 19 young inventors that went to the state competition. Twelve of them won awards at the state level."Linda Lee, PUE Principal, offered her congratulations to all the students. "I am very proud of your wonderful accomplishments," she said.Benson encourages and invites students to be thinking of something they would like to see invented for next year's competition."The rules are fairly simple," Benson said. "Students think of the invention themselves and then they are allowed adult supervision to create the invention. The students must keep a journal of their progress."The convention is a good way to help students be creative, receive awards and possibly meet the governor. |
