Drivers on along Poteau's main thoroughfare were delayed Wednesday during their morning cummute when several emergency services personnel responded to this two-vehicle accident at the corner of North Broadway and Wilson. Police, fire and EMS responded at approximately 9:45 a.m. after the red PT Cruiser (in the foreground) allegedly ran through the red light and sideswiped the Honda Accord. The Hurst Tool (Jaws of Life) was used to extricate the driver of the Honda. The driver was then transported to Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center for treatment.

Leadership students support troops
Thursday, 03 April 2008
A group of Carl Albert State College students are doing their part to encourage and support U.S. troops by holding a donation drive.Twelve CASC students who are a part of the President’s Leadership Class are rallying the local community to send a variety of items to overseas soldiers through Operation: Cadet Care.“I think it’s great,” said CASC student Miranda Royer. “I have friends who are serving in Iraq and I know they love receiving things from home.”Royer said the class has placed drop boxes at several area locations. Students hope local residents will fill them with personal hygiene products, books, movies, and other items that will make the troops’ stay abroad more comfortable.Student Juanita James said the class wants to ensure the care of overseas soldiers does not wane as the war continues. “We want to boost awareness here and let the troops know we are still rooting for them,” she said.Drop boxes are available at Poteau, Cameron, Panama, Pocola, Sallisaw and Fanshawe schools and also at businesses Cakes & More, Arvest Bank, Poteau Pets, the CASC cafeteria, and Pack & Ship in Poteau.Students will collect the items on April 11 and will drive them to Dallas where they will be shipped to troops.A list of acceptable items is found at www.give2thetroops.org.Students enrolled in the course are Kenda O’Neal of Cameron, Hannah Stockton of Hugo, Marlin Vaught of Valliant, Lacy Smith of Panama, Danny Neighbors of Cedarville, Anton Martynenko of Broken Bow, Chris Pendergrass of Poteau, Lyndsi Long of Cameron, Miranda Royer of Red Oak, Juanita James of Poteau, Tanner Williams of Poteau, and Shelby Rea of Sallisaw.“These students exemplify the qualities necessary to succeed as a leader today,” said Dr. Brandon R. Webb, CASC President. “The goal of the leadership course is to bring those qualities to the forefront of their lives. This project is a perfect way to instill those values.”The President’s Leader-ship Class is building a legacy of helping the local community. Last semester, students spoke with state and local leaders, eventually raising money and support to install new playground equipment and fixtures at Shady Point Schools in LeFlore County. The course is facilitated by President Webb, who is aided by CASC University Center Coordinator Jay Falkner. Those who serve as sponsors and mentors for the course include Karla Webb and Jenna McBee.
