By David DeatonNews ReporterWhen her daughter called her to tell her she had won the $3,000 grand prize, Linda McGowen thought it was a prank. She didn't believe that she had won the Poteau Daily News Newspaper in Education promotion until Samantha Hess, publisher, got on the phone with her.The NIE event was held at Baetz Home Center in Poteau Saturday. For a $20 donation, patrons supported NIE and got a chance to win a $3000 shopping spree from Baetz Home Center.PDN employees cooked hot dogs and served drinks while winners’ names were called out inside the store. Each 25th ticket was a winner. The last ticket drawn was the winner of the shopping spree. The winner had to be present or have a representative at the event to claim the prize.McGowen, a teacher at Leflore, was completely surprised."I have never won anything in my life," she said.McGowen was not present but her daughter, Melissa Caldwell, was there for the event in her place. Caldwell called her mother, who was in Poteau, to tell her the news."I thought she was playing a joke on me," McGowen said. After a few moments on the phone with Hess, she was finally convinced that it was real and showed up to claim the prize.McGowen, who uses the NIE program in her classroom, will now have to decide how to spend her $3,000 shopping spree. I'm sure she'll have plenty of people to help with the decision.Other prizes given away and the winners are as follows:A group from Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center won a vacation package.Linda Lancaster won a $25 gift card.Becky McGowen, won dinner for four at Almost Italy, a $50 value.Mitch Sampson won a weedeater donated by Western Auto.John McAlester was the big winner of a vacuum cleaner donated by Western Auto.Sandy Terry won a DVD player.Bennie Plencia won a big bean bag chair donated by Bridgman's Furniture.Trae Weaver will get to relax beautifully in the La-Z-Boy rocker-recliner she won, which was donated by Country Boy Furniture.Winning newspaper subscriptions were Terri Chitwood, Jeannie McConnell, Orin David, JoB Construction, Jean Daniels and Francis Heflin. |
