Meeting myself coming and going

By George Midgley

Every Tuesday evening, I sit down with my laptop and begin typing this column.  I try to remember all the things that came up that I want to mention since the last time I wrote my column.  Well as I was headed home to write my column for the week, I am pretty sure I met myself on the highway going the other way.

That is how things have been around my house lately.  Between the ballgames, turkey season, field trips and the craziness of the end of school I have been stretched pretty thin.  But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We are finally up and running with our hitting facility.  The boys have been swinging in it every day.  I hope that it pays off for our boys in the future.
The other project (sunroom and screened in room) at our house is already paying off for me.  We now have a hot tub and I love it.  After one of my busy days it is sure going to be nice to kick back and relax in that bad boy.  (I wish I was in there now but I can’t take my laptop in the water, darn it!)
The whole family has sat in it this past week.  The boys have lots of friends wanting to come over too.  They all want to hit in the hitting facility and play in the hot tub.  Ken Ellis has really done a fantastic job!  His work is the best.  We are sure glad that we hired him for the job.
Turkey season is over and I did not get an Eastern bird to go along with my Rio Grande but I am going to get one next year.  I’ve decided that I have to get some decoys before next season.  Those little babies are the ticket, especially in open woods or fields.
I was talking to Haley Crane of Wister the other day and she told me that she had shot a jake on opening morning.  The bird had a five inch beard and she was really proud of it and rightfully so.  Any time you can call in a bird and seal the deal, it is a trophy to me, especially Eastern birds.
John Paul McAlester and I are planning a bow hunting trip to Indiana for the fall.   If it all works out it is gonna be a lot of fun and we will have a chance to harvest a good buck.  I saw some sheds that were found on this property this past year and they were some monsters!  Some of our coaching buddies are hoping to go along too.  I hope it works out where they get to go because I know this will be a trip we talk about forever.
Koby will be going with us to try his luck with a bow.  I’m not sure if he is completely ready, but there isn’t any reason not to get him out there and started.  Cash and Paula are going too, but they are going to be on “vacation” and seeing the sights and finding some fun places to visit while we are hunting.  We’ll meet up each evening with some good stories, I’m sure.  It’ll be a great family trip!  We are all looking forward to it.
Well, since turkey season is over it is time to go fishing.  I have a couple of guys that have promised to take me out in those big fancy fishing boats with all those cool fish finders and such.  Heck, I don’t know if I will be able to handle all of that technology or not.  I’ve always just gone with my gut.  I’m not sure what I’ll do when I see how all those gadgets work.  My wife may have to hide the checkbook.
My cousin Jason is going to visit this summer and we are going to get a cabin out at Long Lake Resort and do some fishing.  We always make a weekend of it when he comes.  You can load up and come out there and visit.  We’ll be cooking on the grill and Jason will bring his guitar and do a little picking and grinning.  We may have to sell tickets to that show.
I will have to make my way across the street from my house to Jim’s Tackle and see if he has any stuff that I just can’t live without.  Last time I was in there he was working on getting his “rod-making shop” up and ready.  He’s going to be making those big ‘ole surf rods.  I’ll have to check that out!
If you have not been out to Jim’s you need to stop by and see all the stuff that guy has!  He is located just off of the old Cameron Highway right out there by the little blue store.  That’s what my kids call it anyway. It’s also known as Fairview Market.  While you’re out there slip in the blue store and get one of their BBQ sandwiches.  Personally, I like the sauce that they call “Smokin’ Hot”.  It is some good stuff!
Only a couple more weeks of school left.  I am so ready for summer to be here.  The boys and I will be doing some fishing on Black Fork River and any other place we can find to stop and throw in a line.  We may even head down to Mountain Fork.  I think Cash and Koby are just about big enough to do some wade fishing.  I just loved that when I was their age.  Who am I kidding? I still love it!
Well the “me” that I met earlier just got home, told me he is ready for bed so I guess that’s all I have for this week.  Enjoy your kids and get them out there hunting and fishing. I promise, you will create memories that last forever.  By the way, take a camera. Sometimes pictures jog memories that could be lost otherwise!
