Return visit
Saturday, 10 May 2008
Feed the Children returned to LeFlore County on Thursday to deliver the second of two truckloads of food for area agencies.According to Heather Sconyers, Social Services Specialist with LeFlore County Department of Human Services, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, County Administrators Association and Feed the Children joined together last year to hold the largest food drive in Oklahoma history. The food drive began as a celebration during the Oklahoma Centennial and the onset of Make A Difference Day. Sconyers said each DHS county office was asked to raise as much money as possible to send to Feed the Children. Feed the Children, in turn, sent a truckload of food and toiletries per every $7,200 raised.Sconyers initiated the fund raising for LeFlore County under the direction of County Director Sevilla Vance. The efforts began in July 2007 and ended in October 2007.The first truckload of food was delivered in November.  "Feed the Children then matched our efforts, by providing an additional truckload of food and toiletries this week," Sconyers stated.LeFlore County raised a total of $4038.10. "We combined our contributions with those collected in Sequoyah, Haskell, Latimer, Cherokee and Adair counties for a total of $7,200," Sconyers continued. "Since LeFlore County raised the most money, delivery was scheduled in Poteau."Facilities for unloading and loading of supplies were contributed by Bell Point Distribution of Poteau. The boxes of food were divided among the counties according to the amount of money each county raised. In November, LeFlore County received 329 boxes of food and toiletries and 13 additional boxes of cookies and crackers. The additional 329 boxes of food and toiletries and 13 boxes of chips and juice was received on Thursday. Feed the Children also provided “flip-flops” at this delivery.Items were divided among community churches throughout the county, the KI BOIS Community Action Food Pantry and the Women’s Crisis Center.Contributing to the project were: Ronald and Patricia Dill, $25; Warren and Bovos, Inc., $50; Terry L.
