It was announced Tuesday that the LeFlore County Coalition Jail Committee (LCCJC) will reorganize and become active again for the purpose of monitoring the activities of the LeFlore County Detention Center and the LCDC Trust Authority.
The LCCJC was formed in 2002 when LeFlore County was facing penalties and fines associated with the old jail and then had problems passing a bond for construction of a new jail.Lundy Kiger, Chairman of the LCCJC, stated, "Officers for the LCCJC attended the April and May meetings of the LeFlore County Detention Center Trust Authority and now feel that someone needs to once again monitor the activities that are taking place related to the operations and personnel of the new county jail."Kiger emphasized that the county jail is doing very well financially due to the state contract with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections which allows the county to house state prisoners."We (officers of the LCCJC) met with the Trust Authority and the jail administrator in April and commended them on doing a good job financially," Kiger said. "But recent problems associated with some members of the Trust Authority, administration, personnel and operations of the jail are causing concern for many in the county. The coalition is fearful that if the situation doesn’t improve that we may put our state contract at risk."Kiger stated the main purpose for reorganizing the LCCJC will be to do everything possible to protect the state contract and ensure that county jail personnel and prisoners are treated fairly and within the law. "Anyone interested in joining the LCCJC is encouraged and we hope once again to have a good mix of people from the county as this issue is important to every tax payer in LeFlore County," Kiger stated. Those interested in joining the LCCJC may call 918-649-3142. "We hope to work closely with the Trust Authority, county sheriff and jail administration in resolving any problems associated with the jail that could put our financial future at risk," Kiger stated. |
