Drivers on along Poteau's main thoroughfare were delayed Wednesday during their morning cummute when several emergency services personnel responded to this two-vehicle accident at the corner of North Broadway and Wilson. Police, fire and EMS responded at approximately 9:45 a.m. after the red PT Cruiser (in the foreground) allegedly ran through the red light and sideswiped the Honda Accord. The Hurst Tool (Jaws of Life) was used to extricate the driver of the Honda. The driver was then transported to Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center for treatment.

Love continues
Thursday, 12 June 2008
By David Deaton,
News Reporter

In these days where one of every two marriages ends in divorce, it is refreshing to know that love still blooms for one couple after 70 years together.
On June 11, 1928, Julius Peppers and Martha Kelley were united in marriage. Now, 70 years later, they are still proclaiming their love and devotion to each other.
"It was in Oliver, Ark., when we where married," said Julius. "I was 19 and Martha was 17."
He is now 89 and she is 87. They live together at The Oaks Healthcare Center in Poteau.
The Peppers' spent the first two and half years of their life together  on the top of the Poteau Mountain as Julius was a fire ranger.
The couple spent the next 19 years in Corpus Christi, Texas, where  Peppers worked for GTX, a fuel storage company, before settling and  making their home in Bates, Ark.
While in Bates Julius worked at Harwood Furniture in Hartford.
The Peppers have spent the last three years in the Oaks Healthcare Center.
Their only child, Doris, passed away three years ago.
Martha is the last remaining of her 14 siblings and Julius is the oldest of nine siblings.
The couple has two grandsons, Clifton Oldaker and Lee Oldaker; two great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.
"Grandma  has congestive heart failure and couldn't take care of herself," said  Lee Oldaker. "So, I brought them here  where I could help look after them."
Mr. Peppers presented his wife with  a bouquet of flowers, a corsage and a necklace for their anniversary.
A 70th wedding anniversary party was celebrated for the couple at the Oaks Center.
