It's nearing the Fourth of July and the firework stands are cropping up along Broadway in Poteau. Many of the stands are being run by school groups and local civic organizations as fund raisers. So why not support a good cause when you spend your money. Starting at the north end of the bypass and traveling south you'll find five firework stands in Poteau. They all sell quality products and are manned by willing volunteers who are braving the heat to raise money for their own particular cause. The Heavener High School baseball and softball teams raised a tent to raise their money. They are located in the parking lot at Wal-Mart. This is the first year that the team has taken on such an endeavor. “Sales have been great,” said Heavener High School baseball player Coby Cross. If it's a faith-based organization you would rather support, stop by the House of Hope Family Worship Center stand located next to Car Mart in Poteau. They are open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. everyday and they accept credit cards. All proceeds go toward the church building fund. “Our church has already out grown our present facility,” said church member Mary Martin. “The youth in the church will also benefit from the sales.” The Wister Wildcats have two stands in town. One is located on the parking lot in front of Walls and the other is in the parking lot at All Star Center. The Pee Wee and Coach Pitch teams are having very steady sales. “The stimulus checks have really helped this year,” said Mitzi Lynn, volunteer sales associate. The Poteau and Heavener Masonic Lodges have teamed up again this year to sell fireworks and are located next to the Poteau Chamber of Commerce office. This is their fifth year selling fireworks. The organization donates regularly to area agencies and/or individuals needing help with medical and other expenses. According to Heavener Mason Jesse Hill, among their projects the Masons sponsor eight students at Carl Albert State College through the Adopt-A-Scholar Program. Volunteers will work the stand as well as provide security during the evening hours. All the firework stands are expecting a good turn out and have plenty of light-flashing and noise-making products on hand. All stands plan to stay open late July 3 and 4 or until they run out of fireworks. |
