Soaring gas prices are keeping some people from traveling during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. No need to worry. There are plenty of activities to do right here in the county. Fun on the Fourth in Poteau will begin with a splash at 5 p.m. with giant water rides and plenty of free games for the kids. Activities will be held downtown and will continue until 8 p.m. The Poteau Chamber of Commerce and several area businesses have joined together again this year to bring four water slides and lots of free games including fishing booths, a patriotic duck pond and the Uncle Sam bean bag toss. Miss Carl Albert State College will be on hand from 5 until 6 p.m. for face painting. Poteau's own Still Kickin' band will begin playing at 6 p.m., so bring a dance partner.
The chamber didn't forget the food. There will be plenty of hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes and smoothies to enjoy throughout the evening. Things will still be in full swing when the fireworks display begins at dusk. The magnificent aerial displays will decorate the skies above the LeFlore County Courthouse. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy. Poteau's Fourth of July Celebration is sponsored by Adams Abstract, Arvest Bank, Auger Mining, Bremner, The Community State Bank, EOMC, State Farm Insurance Agent Dennis Bost, Windstream, Central National Bank, Poteau Daily News and Bud's Country Junction. For more information about the Poteau event, call the Poteau Chamber of Commerce office at 918-647-9178. Wister Pride continues their Fourth of July tradition with the annual parade. The theme for the parade this year is “America The Beautiful.” The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and everyone is encouraged to participate. Floats are especially encouraged from any local group. Political candidates are also welcomed to be a part of the event as well as four wheelers, horses, riders, buggies and bicycles. Trophies will be awarded for the Best Entry in each category. Line-up for the parade is between 9 and 10 a.m. on Del Norte Street in front of Wister High School. The parade will turn left onto Magnolia and follow the usual parade route. Following the parade, the Wister firefighters will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs as a fund raiser. There will be free games for the kids and Dean Covey will provide a horse and dog show. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the Wister Fourth of July. For more about the Wister parade contact Sherry at 918-655-7257. Just a few miles down the road the town of Leflore is having its sixth annual Fourth of July celebration with a parade at 4 p.m. Line up for the parade will start in front of the school at 3 p.m. Following the parade the public is invited to enjoy food, games and door prizes beginning at 5 p.m. The fireworks spectacular will begin at 9 p.m. The best view will be from the Leflore school parking lot. |
