What a game last Tuesday; Howe Wood Bat Tournament is big local event this week, followed next week by LeFlore County Tournament at PARC

September 4, 2012

I'm still amazed at the softball game I witnessed, or at least got to witness most of it, last Tuesday when Panama visited Poteau. The game went 14 innings before the Lady Pirates outlasted the Lady Razorbacks 1-0. The game very well could be a prelude of this month's title game at the 2012 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which will begin next Monday at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex. FYI — I will put the County Tournament bracket in Saturday's edition.
I, unfortunately, had to leave after the 12th inning so I could get my Wednesday sports pages back — and help our paper with election coverage. Those updates on which were going up throughout the night, yours truly was the man in charge for doing that while our news reporters were at the LeFlore County Election Board and going to watch parties.
However, thanks to the one and only Kim Standridge, I was able to get the story into Wednesday's edition. She sent me text messages updating me who did what in innings 13 and 14 so that I could add the information to what I had written on the first 12 innings. Once again, Kim — thanks so much.
“Howe” to Know Where to be This Week
It's been a couple of week since the last local events on the diamond — the Carl Albert State College Fall Classic and the Whitesboro Tournament were the last weekend of the month of August.
That will change as the Howe Wood Bat Tournament will take place Thursday through Saturday at Lions Field. All five LeFlore County fall baseball teams will be in the field. The bracket will run later this week in The Poteau Daily News, while the complete schedule in word form will be at the end of this column.
And There's Still More
While the Howe Wood Bat Tournament is the only major event on the diamond in the county, there will be some LeFlore County representation at other sites in Oklahoma.
The Poteau Lady Pirates will be at the University of Oklahoma Tournament Thursday through Saturday in Norman. During the same three days, the Panama Lady Razorbacks will be in the Coweta Tournament, while the Talihina Golden Tigers will be at the Kiowa Tournament.
