What a week it was

January 29, 2013

I hope you all had as much fun as I did last week at the 81st LeFlore County Tournament. I knew this could have its share of upsets, good games and some history was made — all of which happened.
For the second straight year, an 11th-seeded team upset a sixth-seed team when the Pocola girls knocked off Bokoshe.
You had some nailbiters, like the boys quarterfinal game in which Talihina edged Pocola by a point when Talihina’s Clark Austin hit the first two of three free throws after being fouled at the buzzer on a 3-point shot after the Indians scored with 4.6 seconds left to take a one-point lead.
The Spiro Bulldogs repeated as county champions, the first team to do so since Heavener girls in 2010 and 2011.
Then, there were some droughts which came to an end. The Poteau Lady Pirates won their first county title in 11 years, when they beat Pocola 64-59 to win the 2002 LeFlore County Tournament. Now, the Lady Pirates have a chance at a rare county trifecta, as they can win the third of three girls county titles in the same school year as they won last fall’s fast-pitch softball county title, and will be favored to win this spring’s slow-pitch county title.
Scott Gregory, Poteau’s first-year girls coach, he joined a rare group as he now has coached a girls and a boys team to the county title — doing so with the Heavener Wolves in 2009. I was trying to figure out the last time a coach did that feat, which is hard for someone who has only been in LeFlore County for just less than three years. From all indication, the last coach to win a boys and a girls county title was Raymond Griffith, whose Talihina boys and girls swept the county titles in 1966. Bobby Turner has won two county titles at two different schools, like Gregory now has — but it was two girls teams, Bokoshe in 1979 and Pocola in 1991.
All in all, it was indeed quite a week. Mark your calendar now — Jan. 20-25, 2014 will be the 82nd LeFlore County Tournament. I’m sure glad there’s 51 weeks before the next one happens.
Class 2A, 3A, 4A District Assignments Will Be Announced Thursday
While two weeks ago, county Class A and B basketball teams found out their district assignments, the rest of the county hoopsters will find out their district fates on Thursday. The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association will announce the Class 2A, 3A and 4A district assignments for district tournaments next month to begin postseason play. Look for them to appear in the Poteau Daily News either Friday morning’s edition (should they be announced early enough on Thursday) or Saturday morning’s edition.
