Whitesboro teams make semifinals; Leflore boys upset of Red Oak falls short

January 12, 2013

The Whitesboro High School basketball teams both opened the 2013 Rock Island Conference Shootout with wins, but one of them was a nailbiter.
In a battle of Bulldogs on Thursday in Kinta, Whitesboro handled Clayton 64-39. However, the Lady Bulldogs had to go double overtime to defeat Buffalo Valley 44-38 Thursday in Buffalo Valley.
Both Whitesboro teams made it to the semifinals at their respective sites on Friday. The ’Dogs played the host Eagles in Kinta, while the Lady Bulldogs faced Red Oak in Buffalo Valley.
The title games will be at 6:30 (girls) and 8 (boys) tonight at Wilburton High School, while the third-place games will be at 3:30 (girls) and 5 (boys) this afternoon at the Wilburton gym.
The Leflore Savages came extremely close in knocking off Class B's second-ranked Red Oak Eagles on Thursday in Buffalo Valley. After leading for three quarters, the Eagles were able to fly past the Savages for a 43-34 victory, but Leflore held Red Oak to its season-lowest offensive output.
The Savages played Buffalo Valley in Friday's consolation semifinals, and a win will put them into the consolation finals at 2 this afternoon in Wilburton.
Leflore's girls suffered a 56-5 loss to the Red Oak Lady Eagles. However, due to an injury, the Lady Savages will have to forfeit out of the tournament due to lack of players.
