NORMAN — In our state song, one lyric says, “... where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.” Those words were no truer than Saturday afternoon at Owen Field when the Oklahoma Sooners entertained the Baylor Bears in Big 12 action. If I didn't see a football field and players — and known I was indeed at Owen Field — I possibly would have thought myself to be at a place like Wrigley Field or Candlestick Park because it was so windy. Heck, some of the OU pom-pom girls had their pom-poms blow out of their hands!
However, it didn't seem to bother the Sooners in their 42-34 victory over the Bears. OU (7-2 overall, 5-1 in Big 12 play) had to go against the strong south wind in the first and last quarters, but neither OU quarterback Landry Jones, place-kicker Michael Hunnicutt, kickoff specialist Patrick O'Hara or punter Tress Way were hampered in any way by the wind.
Personally for Stoops, the win put him as OU's all-time winningest coach with his 146th victory, passing Bud Wilkinson.
