The Wister Wildcats and the Howe Lady Lions were each awarded the top seed at the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, and they proved Saturday night at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse why they were deserving of their seeding.
The Wildcats had little problem in beating the Heavener Wolves 47-28 in Saturday night's title game. Both teams reached the championship contest with Friday night semifinal wins at Howe â€” Wister beat Spiro 45-19, while Heavener edged Poteau Pansy Kidd Middle School 32-31.
The Lady Lions had to rally past the Wister Lady Wildcats to claim the title, posting a 43-26 victory in Saturday night's title games. Both teams won their semifinal games on Friday at Howe as the Lady Lions downed Monroe 43-30, while the Lady â€˜Cats posted a 36-27 win over Spiro â€” which had pulled off two upsets to get to the semfinals.
The Lady Bulldogs did take home some hardware as they defeated tournament host Monroe 49-33 to win the third-place game. The PKMS boys claimed third place as they used a strong second half to down the Spiro Bulldogs for a 39-33 comeback victory.
The Pansy Kidd Lady Raiders, who won the tournament last year, won the fifth-place game, downing the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers 28-14.
The Golden Tigers laid claim to the fifth-place trophy as they defeated Monroe 63-46.
The first two trophies of the tournament were handed out Friday at Monroe with the consolation championships. The Panama Razorbacks got past the Arkoma Mustangs 39-35, while the Bokoshe Lady Tigers defeated the Panama Lady Razorbacks 40-35.
