Low oil prices force 2 Oklahoma companies to cut jobs

SKIATOOK, Okla. (AP) — Two oil and gas companies are cutting jobs in Oklahoma due to a decline in oil and natural gas prices.

According to reports, Ohio-based Worthington Industries cut 40 jobs at its Skiatook plant Tuesday, and Samson Resource Co. confirmed Thursday that it is laying off 196 employees from its Tulsa headquarters.

The Skiatook plant, which manufactures horizontal heated and high pressure separators used to separate oilfield fluids and gas, employs about 100 people.

Tornadoes hit Oklahoma, Arkansas; 1 dead, several injured

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The first batch of severe weather in this year's tornado season devastated an Oklahoma mobile home park, as storms across the area damaged buildings, tore off roofs and left debris strewn across roads. One person was killed and several were injured.

Tens of thousands of Oklahoma residents were without power early Thursday as officials assessed the damage.

Tulsa County Sheriff's Capt. Billy McKelvey said one person was killed in the mobile home park in the Tulsa suburb of Sand Springs, which he said could accommodate 40 to 50 trailers.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued, severe weather possible

National Weather Service in Tulsa has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for LeFlore County until 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Radar showed scattered showers and thunderstorms, some which have become severe with quarter size hail reported. Storms are expected to race northeast around 50 mph as a cold front approaches. Numerous thunderstorms will continue to become severe, NWS said.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued

The National Weather Service in Tulsa has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of Latimer and LeFlore County in southeastern Oklahoma.

Severe thunderstorms were located near Red Oaks and Damon, moving southeast at 20 mph. Hazards with this storm include quarter size hail. Damage is expected for vehicles.

Locations near the path of this storm include Red Oak, Yanush, Bengal, Talimena State Park, Summerfield, Talihina and possibly Heavener.

NWS suggests, for your protection, to move to an interior room of your home or the lowest floor of a building.

NWS: Severe storms set for tonight, into Wednesday

The National Weather Service in Tulsa has released a hazardous weather outlook into Tuesday night and Wednesday for southeastern Oklahoma.

For Tuesday (March 24) afternoon and night, warm temperatures, low humidity values and gusty southwest wings will create an elevated danger of wildfires into the afternoon, especially near Interstate 44.

An Airbus with 150 people onboard crashed in the southern French Alps on Tuesday, officials said. The A320, operated by Lufthansa’s budget airline Germanwings, was flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and went down in the Digne region of the Alps-De-Haute Province, according to Reuters. There were 144 passengers, two pilots and four crew members, Germanwings said.

BREAKING: Three sent to hospital in mill explosion

Three were sent to the hospital Monday evening after an explosion in the Heavener Feed Mill grain elevator. Two victims were taken to Tulsa by Eagle Med and Tulsa Life Flight, while one was taken by ambulance to Fort Smith, Ark. Two are reported to be in critical condition. The cause of the explosion remains unknown at this time.

Wreck blocks Poteau traffic

Poteau Police are working [March 20 at 3:05 p.m.] a two-car accident at the intersection of Wilson and Broadway. The road is partially blocked.

No tornadoes reported anywhere across US in March

TULSA, (AP) — The U.S. appears to be locked in a tornado drought as meteorologists have recorded only about two-dozen twisters so far this year during a period when 100 or more are typical.
And there have been no reports of tornadoes so far in March — a sometimes violent period for severe weather. The last time there were no tornadoes in March was 1969.
Forecasters at NOAA's Storm Prediction Center in Norman have issued only four tornado watches and no severe thunderstorm watches — less than 10 percent of the average 52 tornado watches issued by mid-March.
