WISTER — The Howe Lady Lions basketball team may not have repeated as LeFlore County Tournament champions, but they did win the first what they hope are many postseason titles.
The Lady Lions once again had a tussle with the Wister Lady Wildcats in Saturday night’s Class 2A District Tournament title game, but were able to outlast the host team for a 50-43 victory.
The Lady Lions (19-7) will play Preston at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Crowder in the Class 2A Regional Tournament, and not only are just a win away from making the regional title game but also making next week’s area tournament in Wilburton.
The Lady ’Cats (11-16), who opened the district tournament with a 51-43 victory over Rattan, also made the regional tournament as district runners-up and will play Crowder at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. They will have to win three times in three days to make it to next week’s Class 2A Area Tournament in Wilburton.
The Lions came oh so close to making it a district title game sweep, but ended up losing 46-41 in overtime to the Rattan Rams in Saturday night’s championship game. The Lions (19-8), who opened the district tournament with a 63-32 rout of the host Wister Wildcats on Friday night, will face Porter Consolidated at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Class 2A Regional Tournament in Crowder, and must win three times in as many days to make next week’s area tournament.
The loss ended the season for the ’Cats (13-13).
