TALIHINA — Two years ago when the Talihina Golden Tigers basketball team won the Class 2A State Tournament, current seniors Clark Austin and Caleb Killingsworth were sophomores on that squad.
After not making state as juniors, Friday night they punched their tickets to the 2013 Class 2A State Tournament with a 62-50 win over the Preston Pirates to win the area tournament. The feeling Friday night was a little different than two years ago when the Golden Tigers beat the Pirates to make state.
“It [the feeling] was kind of like when we won the state championship a couple of years ago,” Austin said. “When I was a sophomore, it didn't really quite mean as much, but now that I'm actually in it [state] as a senior, it's quite amazing.”
It's hard not to compare 2011 with 2013. The Golden Tigers made state by beating Preston. However, after that, the comparison ends.
“It felt like deja vu because both teams got back together, playing for an area championship,” Killingsworth said. “That's the part that's deja vu. But us being underdogs to get to where we are, that made it feel a whole lot better.”
