Joe Matthew Cooper, 61, of Poteau died Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark.. Joe was born July 2, 1951, in San Bernadino, Calif., to Smokey and Juanita M. Cooper. Joe and Smokey Cooper had Cooper’s Furniture and Appliance. He was an avid fisherman. He loved his family and hosting family get-togethers. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Matthew Nelson Cooper; father- and mother-in-law, Bill and La-Dean Ritter.
Survivors include his wife, Becky of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Crystal and Cody Lum of Shady Point; brothers and sister-in-law, Randy D. and Cindy Cooper of Gans, Gary N. Cooper of Sugarloaf; uncle, John Cooper of Poteau; aunt, Joan Cooper of Poteau; sisters-in-law and husbands, Frances and David Butler, Virginia and Steve Hughes, Lora and Tim Daugherty all of Poteau; brother-in-law, Lawton Ritter of Spiro; special friend, Margaret Gray; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; cousins, other relatives and loved ones.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau, with the Rev. Jim Cook officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Daniel Martinez, Joe Nance, Michael Cooper, John Cooper, Gary Brown, Dennis James, and Brian McCaslin. Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Lum, Brian Hughes and David Eggleston.
