CATOOSA — A coaching role at the All-State Golf Tournament was a once in a lifetime deal for Poteau boys golf coach Mike Thomas.
Coaches are only allowed to coach one sport one time at the annual event.
So Thomas, who coached both the East boys and the girls, made the best of memories Monday checking up on golfers throughout Monday's All-State Golf Tournament at Cherokee Hills Golf Course.
“I’ve got to know a lot of these kids through the years from playing against my kids in high school golf tournaments,” Thomas said. “A lot of them I didn’t know because they’re in other classes where we don’t see them, but to get to know them, get a little bit of a relationship with them and to actually watch the caliber of golf we got to see [Monday], that’s one thing I like to do.”
And the East did with 31½-16½ win over the West to get the 2013 Oklahoma Coaches Association's All-State Games week under way.
Wister's Tyler Gibson was slated to play in Tuesday's Small School All-State Game for the East at Oral Roberts University's J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Tonight, Poteau wrestling duo Tyler Tustin and Derek Francis will try to help the East beat the West in the All-State Wrestling Dual that will begin at 7 p.m. at Bixby High School.
To cap the week, Poteau's Jay Werner and Talihina's Trevor Crone will play for the East team, which will have Werner's dad — and second-year Poteau coach — Greg Werner as one of the coaches, in the All-State Football Game, which will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday at Union-Tuttle Stadium at Tulsa Union High School.
Clarification: Due to misinformation originally sent out by the Oklahoma Coaches Association, Poteau's Troy Barnett was not named a replacement for the East football team.
