Last weekend, the Poteau Pirates had their annual red-white scrimmage at Costner Stadium. For the first time since the 2012 season finale against the Tulsa Rogers Ropers, the Pirates will see somebody else.
The Pirates will scrimmage the Heavener Wolves beginning at 6:30 tonight at Costner Stadium.
“I was thinking the other day,” second-year Poteau coach Greg Werner said.
“We had spring football, all summer, a three-day camp and passing leagues. We're really looking forward to hitting someone that's not ourselves. Just a chance to go out there against a different opponent will be pretty nice.”
The Wolves would sort like to get the Highway 59 rivalry going once again, and tonight's scrimmage may be a such a prelude to that.
“They're in [Class] 4A, and we're in 3A,” second-year Heavener coach Carl Lee said. “We're 15 miles apart. It used to be a good rivalry. That's something we're trying to get rekindled. We're looking forward to it. We're going to try to show what we can do. Hopefully, we'll both come out injury free.”
The Pirates are asking for donations of Gatorade and/or Powerade in any quantity — eight-, 12- and 24-pack.
The Poteau Quarterback Club will have a tailgate party sponsored by The Community State Bank beginning at 5:30 p.m. Burger baskets will be available for $5.
