SHAWNEE — The Heavener High School cross country runners got a taste of what the Class 3A State Meet course will be like as they ran in the Oklahoma Baptist University Invitational on Thursday at the Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center.
In the girls 3,200-meter run, the only Heavener runner was Gloriann Staines, who was 215th (17:52) out of nearly 300 runners in the race.
In the girls 3,200-meter junior varsity race, Barbara Johnson was 25th (15:05), while Ali Paxton was 89th (17:27).
In the boys 5k run, Arturo Ortega was 72nd (19:44), Frank Cruz was 97th (20:18), Octavio Sanchez was 148th (21:16), Esteban Martinez was 183rd (21:57), Jacob Robertson was 201st (22:42) and James Horner was 224th (23:43).
As a team, the Wolves were 22nd out of 29 teams with 532 points. The Kansas Comets won the team title with 61 points, with Velma-Alma a distant second with 149 points.
In the boys 5K JV run, Devon Mathews was 133rd (25:25), Tony Antonio was 149th (28:03) and Aaron Baker was 156th (28:03).
The Heavener runners will be off until next Saturday when they will run in the Class 3A Regional Meet at Henryetta. The girls will run at noon, followed by the boys in their hopes of qualifying for the Class 3A State Meet, which will be Oct. 26 at Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center.
