I had a barbecue cookout Saturday for my brother, Tim Gifford's, 46th birthday. Kevin Hill and I decided since we were going to cook, that we'd have a contest to see who made the best barbecue brisket.
I smoked my brisket for hours using slow-smoked hickory, while Kevin cooked his in a roaster using Claude's Brisket Marinade — and he won. Talk about shock to my barbecue ego. It was really good. Lo and behold, my own family turned on me and voted in favor of Kevin's masterpiece. The judges were Vincent Hill, the head judge, along with Dennis Mattox, Coy Hill and John Hunt. They liked mine, but gave Kevin the win.
I was told that we would have 10 to 12 peole come to the cookout. No problem, right? There were 38 people who showed up. Good thing I cooked extra racks of ribs. We had to get out all our tables and chairs, and there were more people here than at my Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners combined.
