The Poteau Pirates are trying to forget about last week's 31-16 loss to the Gravette (Ark.) Lions. In fact, Poteau Coach Jeff Broyles believes the defeat has acted as a wake-up call.
“When you turn the ball over nine times, you're not going to win,” he said. “That's the bottom line. We definitely shot ourselves in the foot. We did not have a good week of practice last week. We were feeling real good about ourselves. We had talked to the kids a couple of times about it. The good news is I think they got it. I think they now realize that even though we've had success, we have to come to work every day. We've been preaching getting better each week. We definitely did not get better last week — we got worse. I think they realize that now, and they'll take that message and apply it.”
The Pirates (2-1), tied for 14th in the Class 4A Poll, will try to “apply” it on the gridiron when they entertain the Hilldale Hornets (2-1) in the District 4A-4 opener at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Costner Stadium.
All fans are urged to wear red so the Pirates can “red out” the Hornets. In fact, Broyles is going even further — challenging the Pirate nation.
