Last week, the Poteau Pirates essentially won a playoff-like contest. They celebrated Senior Night last week with a 31-23 win over one of their nemeses, the Broken Bow Savages. The win kept the Pirates (4-4, 2-3 in District 4A-4) alive in the playoff hunt.
“It was a great win, not to mention the way the game shook down,” Poteau Coach Jeff Broyles said. “One of the things on www.coachesaid.com had a story that said that Poteau can play with anybody for a half, but they have no heart. The way the kids stayed in there and battled, it kind of reminded me of the first game of the year (against Checotah). This is something we have to build off of.”
Now, the Pirates will try to keep those playoff hopes alive with a 7:30 p.m. game tonight on the road against the Fort Gibson Tigers (2-6, 2-3). Basically, the winner will keep its postseason chances alive, while the loser will really need a lot of help to make the playoffs.
