Larry Burton Young Sr. left this earth to be with his sweetheart, Sue, on Nov. 5, 2011, in Spiro. He was born Sept. 2, 1922, at Wister to John Thomas and Dena Mae (Lucas) Young.
He was an educator and rancher. His career spanned some 40 years. He began as a student instructor at the University of Oklahoma in 1943. His first assignment was at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa. He then taught in the Coolidge, Ariz., Public School System for three years and worked weekends and summers on the Fred Jones Cattle Ranch. He and wife Sue moved back to Oklahoma in 1950 and joined the Spiro City School System where they remained until retiring in 1983 and 1984, respectively. He served as a Senior High Principal, French Teacher, Junior High Principal, Guidance Counselor, and made a major contribution to the planning, construction and operation of the new Middle School, then served as the Principal. He also worked some summers as a day laborer, painting, tarring roofs and maintaining the school grounds.
He believed that everyone had a special talent in something, and he tried his best to help students develop their talent. All through his teaching and retirement years he was a farmer and cattlerman.
