TALIHINA — There were a couple of shockers on the opening day of the Choctaw Nation Tournament at Ray Henson Gymnasium Thursday — one of which involved a LeFlore County school.
The Howe Lady Lions suffered a 45-44 upset loss to the Rattan Lady Rams, while the Sallisaw-Central boys upset the Antlers Bearcats 53-46.
However, there were some LeFlore County teams which did post opening-day victories. On the girls' side, the host Talihina Lady Golden Tigers handled the Wister Lady Wildcats 76-33, the Howe Lions defeated defending champion Talihina 60-49 and the Wister Wildcats got past the Pocola Indians 65-46.
In other games, Antlers defeated the Pocola Lady Indians 41-29, while Sallisaw-Central's girls beat the Talihina junior varsity 51-16. In boys' action, the Rattan Rams defeated the Talihina JV 38-18.
Friday's boys' championship semifinals had Howe facing Sallisaw-Central and Wister meeting Rattan, with the winners playing for the championship at 8:20 p.m. tonight and the losers playing for third place at 5:40 p.m.
In boys' consolation semifinal action, Talihina played Antlers on Friday, while Pocola faced the Talihina JV. The winners will play for the consolation championship at 3 p.m. this afternoon.
Friday's championship semifinals on the girls' side had Talihina facing Rattan and Antlers meeting Sallisaw-Central. The winners will play for the championship at 7 p.m. tonight, while the losers will play for third place at 4:20 p.m.
In Friday's consolation semifinals in the girls' bracket had Pocola meeting the Talihina JV and Wister meeting Howe. The two winners will play for the consolation championship at 3:40 p.m. this afternoon, while the losers will meet for seventh place at 12:15 p.m. this afternoon.
