The suspense is over. LeFlore County's Class 4A, 3A and 2A basketball schools found out their basketball district tournament playoff fate Thrusday afternoon from the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.
The Poteau Pirates and Lady Pirates will begin the 2012 playoffs the same way they did in 2011 — at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The Poteau teams were awarded a Class 4A District Tournament as they will welcome the Hilldale Lady Hornets and Hornets.
Both Class 3A county schools' basketball teams were sent on the road for their district tournaments.
Heavener was sent to Kansas, while Spiro will be at Eufaula for Class 3A District Tournaments.
When you get talking about Class 2A, that is where the newness takes place. Over the off-season, the OSSAA re-aligned Classes A and 2A, thus instead of the traditional two-team district tournaments in Class 2A as there are is Classes 3A and 4A, there is now three-team districts.
The three-team district format means, just like in Classes A and B, one boys team and one girls team will receive a bye into the championship game, while the other two teams play an elimination game to see who meets the team with the bye for the Class 2A District Tournament championship.
The good news is that two of LeFlore County's Class 2A teams were named host schools for district tournaments — Panama and Wister.
It will be a rather interesting Class 2A District Tournament at the Panama Gym as archrival Pocola and Gore will be the visitors coming to town.
At the Class 2A District Tournament in Wister, Howe and Fort Towson will come calling.
Talihina was sent out of the county for its Class 2A District Tournament as the Golden Tigers and Summit Christian will be at Warner.
Class 4A, 3A and 2A District Tournaments will take place Feb. 17-18, with the district champion and runner-up advancing into the regional tournaments the following weekend.
Class A and B playoffs will begin next Friday and conclude with district-championship games at 6:30 p.m. (girls) and 8 p.m. (boys) on Feb. 11 where the winners and losers will advance to the Class A and B Regional Tournaments Feb. 16-18.
