WISTER — If a team has only one lead in a game, that squad hopes it comes at the final buzzer. That wish became true for the Wister Wildcats basketball team Saturday night at the Wister Gym in the Class 2A District Tournament.
Wister's Cody Luman scored a basket as time expired as the Wildcats downed the Howe Lions 42-41 to win the district title.
The girls' title game did not have such a suspenseful ending as the Lady Lions roared right past the Lady Wildcats 74-36 to win the district championship.
Both the Lady Lions and the ’Cats are just three wins from the Class 2A State Tournament, and will seek the first of those wins Thursday night in the regional tournament at the Howe Gym. Howe's girls will play Panama at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Wister boys against Pocola at 8 p.m. The winners will not only advance to Saturday night's title games at the same times, but will automatically qualify for next week's Class 2A Area Tournament at the new Wilburton Gym.
The losers will then have to win Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon's consolation championship game in the Class 2A Regional Tournament at Ada's Cougar Activity Center to advance to the area tournament.
The Lady Wildcats and the Lions had to win Friday night's games over Fort Towson to keep their season going into this week. Wister's girls used a late rally to down the Lady Tigers 51-46, while the Lions clawed the Tigers 58-29.
Wister's girls and Howe's boys will be in the consolation side of this week's Class 2A Regional Tournament, which will begin Thursday at the Howe Gym. The Lady Wildcats will play Pocola at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Lions against Gore at 3 p.m. The winners must then win Friday night and Saturday afternoon in the consolation championship game — both of which will take place at Ada's Cougar Activity Center — to advance to next week's area tournament in Wilburton.
