HEAVENER — Last year, the Heavener Wolves soccer team was a very young but quick and talented team. The Wolves again should be considered on of the elite teams in the district, and the showdown between the Wolves and Poteau Pirates later in the year could be for the entire ball of wax.
Heavener's boys started out slow in Friday night's season opener against Wickes, Ark., at Harvey Stadium, but once the Wolves put the first goal in the net at the 24:51 mark of the first half, it seemed like the flood gates simply opened up — and the Wolves started to exude confidence. The Wolves won the game 7-2.
It was a happy season opener all the way around, for the Lady Wolves got the late afternoon-night action of soccer off on the right foot as Lady Wolves schooled the Lady Warriors in the art of playing soccer. For the entire first half, the Lady Warriors did not get the ball into the Lady Wolves' territory. It was not until late in the game that Wickes even got a shot on goal as the Lady Wolves prevailed 5-0.
The Heavener teams will be idle until March 20 when they entertain Tulsa NOAH at Harvey Stadium. The girls' game will take place at 4:30 p.m., followed by the boys' contest at 6:30 p.m.
