HEAVENER — For the third straight season, Heavener Wolf long jumper Shaun Bradley finds himself at the biggest meet of the year — the Class 3A State Meet, which will be Friday and Saturday at Ardmore's Noble Stadium.
He hopes the old adage about the third time holds true to form.
“Maybe third time will be the charm,” Bradley said. “My sophomore year, I made it to the state finals. Hopefully, this year, I can come back with the gold.”
Last spring, tragedy struck Bradley as he was disqualified due to problems with his uniform. Ever since, he's been making sure that ugly incident doesn't happen any more.
“It's been one of my main concerns this year, my clothing,” Bradley said. “I've just taken a lot of precautions with my clothing that it never happens again.”
Of Bradley's three trips to state, two of them have happened at Noble Stadium — 2010 and this spring.
“I went there for state my sophomore year,” he said. “It will be an old venue and a new venue. It's sort of familiar, but it will take a little to get used to everything again.”
Two things have been learned from his previous trips to state which Bradley believes will help in this his final state meet.
“Staying focused and having confidence are what I've learned from my previous trips to state,” he said. “I'm definitely looking forward to it.”
Bradley can only imagine what the feeling would be like should he end his Heavener High School career with a state title.
“It would be one of my greatest accomplishments in high school sports,” he said. “It would be a great honor to bring that back to Heavener. I would be extremely happy, and that would be such an honor — and a great accomplishment for me.”
