EUFAULA — Last spring, it was the Eufaula Ironheads who spoiled the Spiro Bulldogs' chance to make state with a victory in the Class 3A Regional Tournament. This year, the ’Dogs returned the favor.
After the Ironheads defeated the Bulldogs 8-1 in Friday night's first title game, the ’Dogs prevailed 2-1 in Saturday's winner-take-all Class 3A Regional Tournament championship game to make state.
The Bulldogs (22-11) will take on Verdigris at this week's Class 3A State Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Edmond Memorial High School.
In the winner-take-all game, the Bulldogs rallied with a two-run sixth inning — without the benefit of a hit.
Trailing the Ironheads (27-6) 1-0 after five innings, a bases-loaded walk to Colton Gamble tied the game.
Then, an error on what would have been an inning-ending double play allowed Cameron Cole to score all the way from second base to give Spiro a 2-1 lead.
In Friday night's loss to Eufaula, the Ironheads jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning, but the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 3-1 in the second inning on Gamble's RBI single. However, that was as close the ’Dogs got.
Eufaula then added a single run in the third inning, then broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning.
