SPIRO — Facing elimination on both Wednesday and Thursday afternoon's games in the 2012 OK Kids PeeWee Regional Tournament, the Spiro Mud Dawgs prevailed both times.
Spiro defeated the Panama Razorbacks 12-0 Thursday afternoon, which came about 24 hours after a 10-0 victory over the McCurtain Outlaws on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mud Dawgs tried to stave off elimination for a third straight time Thursday night against the loser of Thursday afternoon's game between the Atoka Yellowjackets and the Silo Rebels. If Spiro won that game, the Dawgs will play in the loser's-bracket semifinal at 6:15 p.m. tonight, with that winner playing in the loser's-bracket final at 8 p.m. in hopes of making the regional title game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
In Thursday's win over Panama, Spiro starting pitcher Peyton Upchurch threw a one-hit shutout as he struck out eight batters. He was perfect through the first two innings, but a lead-off walk to Panama's Sergio Edwards spoiled the perfect game. Then, a single by Brayden Treat spoiled Upchurch's no-hit bid.
All the runs Upchurch needed, his team provided in the opening inning, mostly thanks to Panama miscues. The Dawgs scored nine runs in the opening inning, with only one hit — that being an RBI single by Connor Rodgers. The other runs scored on an RBI groundout by Gage Woods, four Panama errors and two wild pitches. At the end of an inning, Spiro led 9-0.
Spiro only got three hits off Panama pitcher Hunter Hopkins, singles by Connor Rodgers, Upchurch and Bryton Sebo — with Sebo's being a two-RBI single in the second inning to make it 11-0.
In Spiro's win over McCurtain on Wednesday, it was much the same. The Dawgs jumped out to an early lead, this time at 4-0 after an inning, which became an 8-0 lead after two innings. A two-run fourth inning put the game into run-rule status.
Woods and Connor Rodgers were each 2-for-3 for Spiro. Cory Rodgers got the win.
