Summer is officially over, and school starts this week. This means that dove season is just around the corner, and archery season is not far behind that. With this in mind, be sure that you and your kids have taken the hunter safety course. There is one scheduled this weekend at the Kiamichi Technology Center in Poteau at 8 a.m. Saturday. Don’t waste time; the season will begin before you know it! Another thing you need to be aware of are the Oklahoma Free Hunting Days are taking place Sept. 1-2, during which Oklahoma residents do not need a hunting license or HIP permit to go afield. Dove season will be in full force at that time, and it sure is fun to hunt those birds. Get out there and take advantage of this. There aren't very many things free in this world.

While I was gone on vacation, I heard that Poteau got an army surplus store. I’m anxious to get down there and check it out. It is on my agenda for later this week or this weekend. I will be doing this, along with hanging some tree stands and cameras. I usually have them up by now, but my schedule and the price of corn and rice bran have caused me to put it off.

It is time to be shooting your bow just in case that buck does wander under your stand. Make sure you have good shooting lanes cut while leaving enough cover so the deer doesn’t spot you before you can get your shot.
Have a great week!
