As I was approached by our sports editor, David Seeley, to write a feature story about the Poteau High School freshman team, I was at first not sure that I wanted to tackle the story. After all, the sports adages say that you do not talk to a pitcher when he has a no hitter going or you do not talk to a batter who has a hitting streak in process.
You see, this freshmen football class has been playing together since they were members of the Bandit, traveling team, seventh-eighth grade football teams, and to this point in time they have never lost a game when they have played together.
I have seen every freshman football game since 1987, and their has been only three of those teams that have ran the tables as freshman going 8-0. There has been some really good teams that have been so very close to running the table, you have got to be both good and lucky to do go undefeated.
Poteau will travel to McAlester Thursday night to take on the Buffaloes. Last year, the eighth-grade Red Raiders won at McAlester, but they won by less than 10 points — one of the closer games in their career.
