The good news for the Panama Razorbacks in last week's season-opening game against the Gore Pirates at George Ollie Stadium was they were in a position they had rarely been in recently — ahead. However, the not-so-good news was that in the end they fell short in a 35-19 loss to the Pirates.
“I thought our kids competed hard for a half,” said Brandon Ellis, Panama's second-year coach. “The disappointing thing was we didn't finish it off. We didn't play for four quarters. I think it wasn't so much anything Gore did. Personally, those kids have never been up at the half — let alone up two touchdowns at the half. That's where our youth and inexperience took over.
“We're playing better ball than we did at this time last year. They're understanding what we're wanting from them, and what our goals are. It's not going to be an overnight process. It's just going to take time.”
The Hogs (0-1) look to rebound against the Roland Rangers at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Roland. The Rangers lost a heart-breaking 7-0 contest on opening night to their archrivals, the Muldrow Bulldogs. So, Ellis knows his team will see a spirited Roland squad Friday night.
