For professional wrestling fans, grappler Bill Goldberg always said, “Who's next?” as he was keeping a undefeated streak intact. If the Vian Wolverines football team and their fans ask that question, the answer is the Pocola Indians.
The Indians and Class 2A's top-ranked Wolverines will open District 2A-6 play at 7:30 p.m. tonight at John Carter Field.
“We know what we're going to be up against,” said Rick Lang, Pocola's coach. “We know they're good. It's going to be a David vs. Goliath. We told our kids that Muldrow had their chance. Spiro had their chance. Now, it's our chance. We're sitting here with an opportunity that doesn't come around often — to play a a team like Vian. They remind me of the team we had in 2007. You get one chance at a quality team. We're excited about it I think you'll see a bunch of spirited kids go play.”
The Wolverines (3-0) have posted wins over Spiro (55-6), Eufaula (62-6) and Muldrow (57-0) to open the season. Indeed, they are the real deal.
“I think Vian is the team to beat (in District 2A-6),” Lang said. “They're so far ahead of everybody else. Vian has more seniors than we have, and they have more kids than we have. It's going to be a challenge for us, but I told the kids to go get after them. I told them they might be surprised with the end result.”
