RATTAN — Things perhaps looked as gloomy as the cloudy Friday afternoon for the Wister Wildcats baseball team as it was trying to make it to its sixth straight state tournament, dating back to the spring of 2010.
The ’Cats lost the Class A Regional Tournament title game 11-0 to the host Rattan Rams Friday afternoon, and were staring a possible state-tournament streak ending when they faced the Tushka Tigers in the consolation championship for another berth in next week's Class A State Tournament. Lo and behold, a senior stepped up to make sure the streak stayed alive.
Tyler Gibson's one-out, two-run home run in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie to lift the Wildcats past the Tigers 4-2 to win the consolation championship — and, more importantly, make state for the sixth straight season.
The ’Cats won their regional opener as they held off the Tigers 5-4 Thursday afternoon before the rains came.
The Wildcats (20-8) will find out who, when and where they will play their Class A State Tournament quarterfinal contest on Thursday.
