The Panama Razorbacks football team was able to get its first win of the season last Friday night as it posted a 33-30 District 2A-6 road win over the Antlers Bearcats. It was a good win, but still had a lot to be desired in the mind of Brandon Ellis, Panama's second-year coach.
“It was twofold,” Ellis said about the win. “It was a good win for the kids, but it was a very ugly win. We played well in the first quarter and the last two minutes of the game, but it was a win. We came out healthy after the game. We got the monkey off our back. Hopefully, that will get us going the rest of the year.”
Being in District 2A-6 this year and 2013, the district is an abnormal seven-team district, as opposed to the customary eight-team district. Thus, one week during the district season, each team will have one of two things — an open date or a non-district opponent. Panama has the latter.
The Hogs (1-5) will entertain the Quinton Savages (2-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at George Ollie Stadium. Ellis would rather play than have an open date.
“You don't want to take a break because it breaks up your momentum,” he said. “I've played them ever since I was at Gore. They've always had a competitive team.”
