POCOLA — Last week, the Pocola Indians suffered a 40-0 loss to the Hartshorne Miners. While the game did not eliminate the Indians from the playoff hunt in Class 2A, they are in must-win situations tonight and next week.
The Indians (4-3 overall, 2-2 in District 2A-6) will need to win Thursday night against Antlers and next week in their rivalry game at Panama to get at least third place in the district — and a playoff berth. Tonight's game with the Bearcats will begin at 7:30 p.m. at John Carter Field.
“We have to bounce back from last week,” said Rick Lang, Pocola's coach. “It's an important game. Our kids know the importance of it. Vian and Hartshorne are the best two teams of our district. It's going to be tough for anybody to beat those guys. For the rest of us, there's four teams are fighting for third and fourth places. It's a wide-open race. It could come down to Week 9, maybe even Week 10. I told the kids that we're the only one of those four teams who control our own destiny. If we win out, we're 4-2 (in district play) and we go third. That's what we're shooting for. We know what's at stake. Our practices have been upbeat. We know our season is on the line. We'll fight for it. They've been fighting all year.”
