TULSA — An epic western movie is entitled, “How the West Was Won.” There was a football game Saturday at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium that could have also been described with that title.
Keyarris Garrett caught three touchdowns receptions to lift Tulsa to a 23-21 victory over Central Florida Saturday in a battle of Conference USA division leaders, and a likely preview of the league championship game.
The Golden Hurricane (9-2 overall, 7-0 in C-USA) clinched the west division championship with the win, and will play in the league championship game on Dec. 1, which will most likely be in Tulsa. A win on Saturday at Southern Methodist in the regular-season finale will clinch home-field advantage for TU. UCF (8-3, 6-1), which remains atop the east division, will be the opponent if it wins next weekend again Alabama-Birmingham.
“You love getting to see your players achieve something, and then watch them realize the moment,” said Bill Blankenship, Tulsa's coach and Spiro native. “It's pretty special.”
