Editor's note — This is the second of a two-part series previewing the Poteau High School basketball teams.
Last season, the Poteau Lady Pirates basketball team was the Cinderella story of the 2012 LeFlore County high school basketball playoffs. After ending the regular season at 5-18 last season, the Lady Pirates won three of five playoff games, won the Class 4A District Tournament, were consolation champions at the regional tournament and got to within three wins of the state tournament.
With only three players gone from that team, expectations are high this season, which will begin next week with the Keys Cougars Invitational.
The season also will commence the Scott Gregory era as new coach.
“I knew coming in that we could be pretty good,” said Gregory, who came to Poteau after several seasons coaching the Heavener Wolves. “They've really responded well. They've done everything I've asked them to do — and then some. They're really an athletic bunch of kids. They're really positive and are go-getters — and they're having fun. It's been a lot of fun, and I've really enjoyed it so far. They're tired of beating up on each other. They're ready to play games that count, and show that they're better than last year — and I think they feel that way.”
