TAHLEQUAH — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team got a huge dual win Thursday night as the Pirates upset Class 5A’s eighth-ranked team, the Tahlequah Tigers, by a score of 40-36.
The Pirates (11-4 in dual meets this season) got pins from Devin Anderson (120 pounds), Will Longenbaugh (126), Derek Francis (170), Khy Mote (182), Gabe Sanchez (195) and Daylon Brewton (heavyweight). It was Brewton’s match that decided the meet as Poteau trailed 36-34 going into the battle of heavyweights.
Tyler Tustin (138 pounds) won by major decision, but another crucial factor in favor of the Pirates was that, while Sam Shore (132), Grant Wilson (152) and Kyle Kingrey (160) lost their matches, they were not pinned but lost decisions instead.
The Pirates will be off until the remaining Class 4A District Duals matches, which will take place in a triangular with Sallisaw and Wagoner at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The Pirates are down 0-1 after losing a hard-fought 44-33 dual meet to Fort Gibson last month.
