Arkoma Mustangs get shot at district-leading Thackerville Wildcats at home Thursday night

The Arkoma Mustangs will get a shot at District C-4's top football team when they entertain the Thackerville Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Mustang Field. The Mustangs (3-4 overall, 2-3 in district play) are on a two-game winning streak. Two weeks ago, they celebrated homecoming with a 44-36 dramatic win over Midway, then routed Eagle Point Academy 46-16 Friday night in Tulsa.Last week's game was a very crucial one for the Mustangs. For starters, it meant they had a game instead of an open date. That, in turn, led to their young players get some playing time — which may be more important in the eyes of Mark Weatherton, Arkoma's coach.“We've got so many young kids trying to learn, and it's a slow process,” he said. “It takes a lot of time for figure out what we need them to do, but they're getting there. Friday, night, we got a lot of reps in for our young guys. We jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised from there. Everybody got to play some, and that's what we needed.”Now, the Mustangs will be in district play for their final three games. Although the playoffs do not begin until Nov. 9, the postseason has virtually started for Arkoma.“If we want to get into the playoffs, we have to win,” Weatherton said. “We've got to play at an all-time high level. We have to come up with big plays. We also have to hope that Thackerville has an off game because of the four-hour bus trip. We're going to be our biggest challenge of the year that we've had. Defensively, it's going to be a huge challenge because they run a lot of different sets.”— — —District C-4 StandingsTeam District Overall +/-Thackerville 4-0 4-2 +47SW Covenant 3-1 4-2 +30Sasakwa 3-1 4-2 +30Webbers Falls 3-1 5-1 +30Maud 2-2 4-2 0Arkoma 2-3 3-4 -22Midway 1-5 1-6 -53Bokoshe 0-5 1-6 -62
