Arkoma seeks second straight win in non-district football road game against Eagle Point Academy

If ever there was a team which was needing a win, one such team was the Arkoma Mustangs. After the Mustangs had lost three straight District C-4 games to be in dire straits of making the playoffs, along came a thrilling 44-36 win over the Midway Chargers last Friday night at Mustang Field on homecoming.“The kids were really excited,” said Mark Weatherton, Arkoma's coach. “It was a great football game. The crowd was into it. It had been three tough weeks for us. To get a win in the fashion we did, scoring with 36 seconds left, it felt good.”By getting the eight-point win last week, it kept the Mustangs (2-4) in the playoff hunt.“That was a big thing,” Weatherton said about the homecoming win. “It would have been really tough to lose that game, and know that our playoff hopes were completely knocked out. It would have been hard to keep practice for these last four weeks with nothing to play for. It was big to get that win. Now, we have a non-district game this week. Then, we get Thackerville the week after. (The win) kept our playoff hopes alive, and somewhat keep ourselves with control of our own destiny. We'll see what we do with it.”As Weatherton said, the Mustangs will step outside District C-4 play to face Eagle Point Academy at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hicks Park in Tulsa. Friday night's game will mark the second straight week the Tulsa Christian school's team will face a LeFlore County team. Eagle Point suffered a 36-18 loss on the road last week at Bokoshe, which was the Tigers' first win of the season. To Get There — Take Oklahoma State Highway 112 east to Fort Smith, Ark.
