Battle of Bulldogs tonight as Valliant visits Spiro

SPIRO — It will be a battle of Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. tonight at McClain Stadium as Valliant will come to town to meet host Spiro in a critical District 3A-8 contest for the local ’Dogs.Spiro (4-3 overall, 3-1 in district play) has won three straight games in 3A-8 play, including Friday night's 45-28 win over the Heavener Wolves.“I thought we played real good defense in the first half,” said Chris Bunch, Spiro's coach. “We jumped out early on them. That made a big difference because we got tired in the second half, and they put some points on the board. I was just glad we jumped out early on them in the first half.”The win, coupled with Checotah's 22-13 upset win over Stigler on Friday night, has put Spiro in a multiple tie for the District 3A-8 lead. So, not only is getting a home playoff berth at stake in tonight's game with Valliant, so, too, is a possible district title.“We like where we're at, but there's still going to be a lot going to have to happen for us to finish first,” Bunch said. “Hopefully, somebody can knock off Stigler, and we take care of business and win out. We just have to take it one game at a time. We have to take care of Valliant. We're still controlling our own destiny, and these kids realize that. They definitely have a chance to finish second, and could possibly finish first.”— — —District 3A-8 StandingsTeam District Overall +/-Checotah 3-1 6-1 +37Spiro 3-1 4-3 +30Stigler 3-1 5-2 +23Roland 3-1 5-2 +22Eufaula 2-2 2-5 -7Heavener 1-3 3-4 -23Valliant 1-3 3-4 -32Idabel 0-4 1-6 -50
